Leonids Meteor Shower

The Leonids is one of the most well-known meteor showers, reaching its peak every year around 15–16 November. It happens when Earth moves through the trail of debris left by Comet Tempel–Tuttle.

The shower is named after the constellation Leo the Lion, since the meteors seem to come from that part of the sky. Leonids are famous for their bright, fast-moving meteors that often leave glowing trails behind them.

On a clear, dark night away from city lights, you can usually see 15–20 meteors per hour during the peak. In the past, the Leonids have even produced incredible “meteor storms”, when thousands of meteors lit up the sky in just one hour—though such events are rare and not expected every year.
